Poem

RESPECT
By: Don Wilson
Respect is a lesson that everyone should learn
Respect must be given before an expected return
Respect is something that’s given for free
Respect is about us and never about me
Respect is the basis on which relationships are founded
Respect is the anchor that keeps a person well grounded
Respect builds the character and defines who we are
Respect sets the standard and raises the bar
Respect is magnanimous and helps to fulfil
Respect is the partner that sits with good will
Respect is like honey so sweet it’s perceived
Respect a taste to savour for when it’s received

Song Lyrics

"RESPECT"
By: Aretha Franklin

(oo) What you want
(oo) Baby, I got
(oo) What you need
(oo) Do you know I got it?
(oo) All I'm askin'
(oo) Is for a little respect when you come home (just a little bit)
Hey baby (just a little bit) when you get home
(just a little bit) mister (just a little bit)

I ain't gonna do you wrong while you're gone
Ain't gonna do you wrong (oo) 'cause I don't wanna (oo)
All I'm askin' (oo)
Is for a little respect when you come home (just a little bit)
Baby (just a little bit) when you get home (just a little bit)
Yeah (just a little bit)

I'm about to give you all of my money
And all I'm askin' in return, honey
Is to give me my profits
When you get home (just a, just a, just a, just a)
Yeah baby (just a, just a, just a, just a)
When you get home (just a little bit)
Yeah (just a little bit)

------ instrumental break ------

Ooo, your kisses (oo)
Sweeter than honey (oo)
And guess what? (oo)
So is my money (oo)
All I want you to do (oo) for me
Is give it to me when you get home (re, re, re ,re)
Yeah baby (re, re, re ,re)
Whip it to me (respect, just a little bit)
When you get home, now (just a little bit)

R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Find out what it means to me
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Take care, TCB

Oh (sock it to me, sock it to me,
sock it to me, sock it to me)
A little respect (sock it to me, sock it to me,
sock it to me, sock it to me)
Whoa, babe (just a little bit)
A little respect (just a little bit)
I get tired (just a little bit)
Keep on tryin' (just a little bit)
You're runnin' out of foolin' (just a little bit)
And I ain't lyin' (just a little bit)
(re, re, re, re) 'spect
When you come home (re, re, re ,re)
Or you might walk in (respect, just a little bit)
And find out I'm gone (just a little bit)
I got to have (just a little bit)
A little respect (just a little bit)

Critique of Flag by Jasper Johns

Jasper Johns, who has produced art in a variety of genres, including Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Dadaism, and Pop Art, created an awesome representation of the American Flag called simply Flag in 1930. It is made out of encaustic, which is hot wax, oil paint, collage on fabric mounted on plywood. What I like about this piece, first and foremost, is the rendering of the stars, how accurate and precise they are, and how evenly spaced! The stripes are equally sized as well. Upon close inspection of the piece of art, you can see the texture of the hot wax, which resembles thick areas of paint. You can see areas of imperfect discoloration, which can be interpreted as some of the imperfect parts of American History and society. It is overal a simple piece, that must have been very complicated to accomplish, working with hot wax in all. The piece falls under the category of Pop Art, which is just about anything that is created around popular items. A great, yet simple piece.

Critique #2

The artist of my painting is R. Vernon. This is a painting of Jesus and two inmates. The title of the painting is “Jesus and inmates.” The medium of this photo is some type of paint using both cool and warm colors. The subject matter is respect. The painting is of Jesus reaching out his arms to two inmates and bringing them into the heart which is filled with the sun and bright colors.
The allusion that this painting shows is that inside the heart represents happier times and a new life. The bird in the air and Jesus’ arms reaching out creates a sense of movement. The juxtaposition of the heart separates the good and the bad times of the two people. The light and the fading of the picture gives it a sense of space. The artist put darker colors on the bottom of the picture because those were the bad times and dark colors represent bad times. However, he put warm colors in the background and in the heart because those represent the good times. The bad times and good times give the picture a good contrast. The focal point of the picture is Jesus helping the two inmates into better times and a new life. The two people and the images of all the bad things are the foreground of the painting and have the most detail. The detail in the painting gives it a sense of texture.
The focal point of this picture is Jesus having respect for the two people and helping them into better times. If you look at this painting you can see a narrative that is told. Even though these people are inmates and have done bad things in their life, Jesus still has respect for them. He is trying to help them into better times and helping them into a new life to start over. This teaches people to try and have respect for everyone. Even though people might not always be good, to have respect for them is the right thing to do. I think the images of all the bad things and Jesus reaching out to help them enhances the composition and makes it more effective.

Critique #1

This is an image of a photograph that someone took. The title of it is, a Christian man respecting a Christian woman. It is a picture of a man opening the door for the lady to get into the car. This shows the idea of how the man has respect for the woman which ties into my theme of respect.
This photograph has many components to it. The telephone wires in the background create lines. The background with trees and house give the photo more detail. The forms of the people make them look realistic. The two people getting into the car is the foreground and they have the most detail. The proportion of the people and the car is correct. The focal points of the picture are the two people and the car. The chiaroscuro of the black and white makes the darker objects stand out more. The branches of the trees give texture to the picture. The shade of the car makes it stand out more because it is darker. The door that’s halfway open and the woman getting inside gives the photo movement. There is a wide range of value in the picture, going from white all the way to black. The trees and part of a house give the picture a sense of space.
The focal point of this picture is to show how the man has respect for the lady. Within this picture there is a subtle narrative. The story that this picture explains is, first off the man is picking his wife up from work, like usual. To show his respect for her, he opens the door for her to get in. She loves this sense of respect and smiles at him to show her appreciation. He smiles back and they get in the car to go home. This is the short narrative that this picture explains.

Declaration

The concept that I have chose is respect. Respect is a very important aspect in life. I feel that everyone should have respect for everyone else, unless they give them a reason not to. My friends and family all have respect for me, as I do for them. However, I have also lost respect for some people, and I am sure people have lost respect for me as well. I try my best to have respect for everyone. I especially have respect for people who are older than me because I think they deserve it. I respect my parents the most because they’ve given me everything and have taught me a lot.
The reason why I chose this topic is because as time goes on, I’ve noticed, that people are starting to respect people less and less. People in the world are not respecting humans the way they should be. Through time people are not taking into consideration who people are and how they should be treated. They aren’t realizing that disrespecting people is wrong. Also, if you don’t respect other people then you aren’t going to get respect back.
One artist that I found that has done paintings about respect is Paolo Veronese. Aretha Franklin wrote the song respect, which is a popular song. A lot of other songs and poems are also about respect.
